October brings a proper mix of touring comedy, opera and one-off concerts to Yorkshire's stages, with several venues running packed weekday and weekend bills right through the month. There is a lot to plan around, whether you fancy an evening of Tchaikovsky or a stand-up set from someone you have only seen on a panel show.
Below is a city by city look at what is confirmed for October 2026, followed by a section on the less visible work that keeps concert halls and theatres running: moving the pianos that sit behind so much of this programming.

How a grand piano actually gets through a stage door
Every concert listed above depends on an instrument already being in position long before the audience arrives, and getting a grand piano from a van to a stage is not a simple carry job.
Skidding, not carrying
A grand piano is lowered onto its side onto a padded skid board, with the lid, lyre and sometimes the legs removed first. It is then wheeled, not lifted, through doorways and corridors. Lifting a grand by its case risks the rim and the internal bracing, so the skid takes the weight evenly across the board rather than through anyone's arms or back.
Doorways and corners
A standard grand is wider than most domestic doorways once you account for the turning circle needed to get it through at an angle. This is why an access survey happens before moving day. Someone measures door widths, corridor turns, step heights and ceiling clearance, and checks whether the piano needs to go up or down a kerb or through a fire door that does not sit fully open. Stairs change the job completely. A piano on stairs usually needs a dedicated board, straps and enough people to control the descent rather than just push weight down a slope.
Settling time after the move
A piano that has travelled, especially any distance, needs time to acclimatise before it is tuned. The wood, the soundboard and the strings all respond to changes in temperature and humidity, and a piano tuned immediately after a move will often drift out of tune again within days as it settles into the new room's conditions. Venues that book a tuner for the same afternoon as a delivery are often working against the instrument rather than with it.
Unheated spaces
Church halls, cathedrals and older community venues are frequently unheated or only partially heated, and humidity swings in these spaces are harder on a piano than almost anything else. Swelling and shrinking in the wood affects tuning stability and, over time, the action. Anyone storing or housing a piano in a venue like this long term is better off treating humidity control as part of the piano's upkeep, not an afterthought.
This kind of planning applies whether the move is into a 1,500-seat hall or a front room. If you are weighing up a move anywhere between piano removals in Wakefield and piano removals in Halifax, the same questions about access, timing and settling apply.
