What an access survey is actually looking for

Before any piano moves into a venue or a home with tight corners, we look at the route it will travel, not just the room it will end up in. That means checking door widths, stair turns, corridor bends and the height of any lift, because a grand piano on its side is still a wide, awkward shape even once the legs and lid are off.

Why stairs change the whole job

A straight run of stairs is manageable with the right equipment and enough hands. A stairwell with a half landing and a tight turn is a different problem entirely, because the piano has to be tilted and pivoted at exactly the point where there is least room to do it. This is usually where a job is quoted differently once someone has actually seen the space, rather than just heard a description of it over the phone.

Skidding a grand through a doorway

Grand pianos are typically moved on a skid board, a purpose-built platform that the piano is carefully rolled onto once the lid is protected and the legs are removed. The skid lets the piano be tilted onto its side and wheeled through doorways that would otherwise be too narrow for its footprint. It also spreads the weight so the piano is not resting on a corner or an edge at any point during the move.

Why a piano needs to settle before tuning

A piano that has just been moved, especially over any distance or into a building with a different temperature and humidity to the one it left, needs time to adjust before it makes sense to tune it. Wood and cast iron respond to changes in the air around them, and the strings will drift slightly as the instrument settles. Tuning too soon means paying for a tuning that will not hold.

Unheated spaces and older buildings

Church halls, village halls and older venues often sit unheated for long stretches, and that has consequences for anything with a wooden frame and steel strings inside it. Damp air swells wood, dry air shrinks it, and a piano stored somewhere with big swings between the two will need more frequent attention than one kept somewhere stable. Anyone hiring out or storing an instrument in this kind of building is worth factoring that into the plan from the start.
